2. Lift the parking brake lock up and gradually release the
upper control bar (Fig. 17). The brake lock should stay
in the set (locked) position.
Releasing the Parking Brake
1. Pull rearward on the upper control bar (Fig. 17). Lower
the parking brake lock to the released position.
2. Gradually release the upper control bar.

Starting the Engine
1. Make sure spark plug wire(s) are installed on spark
plug(s) and fuel valve is open.
2. Move the blade control to off, the shift lever to neutral
and set the parking brake.
3. Turn the ignition key to the run position.
4. Move the throttle control to fast and pull choke out
before starting a cold engine.
Note: A warm or hot engine usually does not require any
choking. To start a warm engine, move throttle control to
fast position.
5. Grasp the recoil starter handle firmly and pull out until
positive engagement results; then pull handle
vigorously to start engine. Allow rope to recoil slowly.
6. Return the choke to the off position.
Important
Do not pull recoil rope to its limit or let go
of the starter handle when rope is pulled out because rope
may break or recoil assembly may be damaged.

Stopping the Engine
1. Move the throttle lever to slow (Fig. 18).
Note: If the engine has been working hard or is hot, let it
idle for a minute before stopping. This helps cool the
engine. In an emergency, the engine may be stopped by
pulling the throttle all the way back, to stop.
2. Turn the key to the off position (Fig. 18).

3. Set the parking brake.
4. Pull wire off spark plug(s) to prevent possibility of
someone accidentally starting the machine while
transporting or storing machine.
5. Close the fuel shut off valve before transporting or
storing machine.
Important
Make sure the fuel shut off valve is closed
before transporting or storing machine, or fuel leakage may
occur.
Operating the Blade Control
(PTO)
The blade control (PTO) lever engages and disengages
power to the mower blades.
Engaging the Mower Blades (PTO)
1. Pull on the upper control bar to stop the machine
(Fig. 19).
2. Hold the bail against the upper control bar (Fig. 19).
